What Is Auto Insurance, Really?

Auto insurance is a financial safety net — a contract between you and an insurance company where you pay regular premiums, and in return, they agree to cover certain costs if you're involved in an accident, your car is damaged, or someone is injured. It's not just a legal requirement in North Carolina; it's a critical part of protecting your financial well-being.

Without adequate auto insurance, a single accident could cost you tens of thousands of dollars — or more. And in North Carolina, driving without insurance can result in license suspension, fines, and even vehicle impoundment.

Types of Auto Insurance Coverage

Liability Coverage (Required in NC)

This is the foundation of your auto policy. For policies issued or renewed on or after July 1, 2025, North Carolina requires minimum liability coverage of 50/100/50:

  • $50,000 per person for bodily injury
  • $100,000 per accident for bodily injury
  • $50,000 per accident for property damage

See the NC Department of Insurance's July 1, 2025 changes for the effective date and required limits.

The legal minimum is not a guarantee that every accident cost will be covered. Higher limits, such as 100/300/100, may offer more protection. The right limits depend on your situation.

Collision Coverage

Covers damage to your vehicle from a collision, regardless of who's at fault. If you have a car loan or lease, your lender likely requires this coverage.

Comprehensive Coverage

Covers non-collision damage: theft, vandalism, weather damage, animal strikes, and falling objects. If a tree falls on your car during a Monroe storm, this is what pays for repairs.

Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage

Uninsured motorist (UM) coverage can help when the driver who caused a crash has no insurance. Underinsured motorist (UIM) coverage can help when that driver's insurance is not enough. North Carolina requires UM/UIM coverage; UIM is included in all new or renewed policies on or after July 1, 2025. See NC DMV insurance requirements for details.

Medical Payments Coverage

Covers medical expenses for you and your passengers regardless of fault. This can be a lifesaver when health insurance deductibles are high.

What Affects Your Auto Insurance Rates?

  • Driving record: Accidents and violations increase your rates. A clean record is your best discount.
  • Age and experience: Young drivers and new drivers pay more. Rates typically decrease as you gain experience.
  • Vehicle type: Sports cars and luxury vehicles cost more to insure than sedans and minivans.
  • Credit score: In North Carolina, insurers can use credit-based insurance scores to set rates.
  • Location: Where you live in Union County affects your rates based on accident frequency, theft rates, and weather patterns.
  • Annual mileage: The more you drive, the higher your risk. Low-mileage discounts are available.
  • Coverage levels and deductibles: Higher deductibles lower your premium, but increase your out-of-pocket costs after an accident.
