Accurate records, electronic filing and careful refund tracking can help you avoid preventable delays. Processing time and refund amounts depend on your return.

Accurate information and complete records can help you avoid preventable refund delays. Filing electronically with direct deposit is generally the fastest approach, but no preparer or software can guarantee when a refund will arrive.

1. Gather records before you file

Collect W-2s, any 1099 forms, other income records and documents supporting deductions or credits. If a form is missing or incorrect, ask the issuer about it and reconcile the amount with your own records.

A payment-app reporting threshold is not a tax-free income allowance. Report taxable income even if you receive no Form 1099-K; use the IRS Form 1099-K guidance to understand the form. Independent contractors generally handle their own income and self-employment taxes; a Form 1099-NEC is not an employee paystub. See the IRS self-employed tax center.

2. Check the applicable filing and payment deadlines

Use the filing dates for your tax year and return type rather than an old tax-season opening date. Filing before you have accurate information can create corrections and delays.

An extension generally gives more time to file, not more time to pay. Check the IRS extension instructions and any relief that applies to your situation.

3. Choose e-filing and check direct-deposit details

The IRS recommends combining electronic filing with direct deposit. Double-check the account and routing numbers before submitting your return. E-filing does not mean instant processing; corrections or further review can delay a refund.

4. Track federal and North Carolina refunds separately

Use IRS refund guidance to find the official federal refund tracker and current timing information. Published timeframes are typical, not a promise for an individual return. For a North Carolina state refund, use the NCDOR refund page; federal refund status does not establish state refund status.

Prepare for a tax appointment

Bring your income documents, relevant expense records, prior return and any tax notices so you can discuss missing information or changes in your circumstances. Your Financial Solutions offers tax return preparation help for Monroe and Union County residents and businesses. A preparation appointment does not guarantee a refund amount, processing date or audit outcome.
